This study showed that abdominal obesity dramatically increases your risk of developing dementia as you age.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This study involved 6,583 members of Kaiser Permanente of  Northern California, ages 40 to 45, who had their abdominal obesity measured between 1964 and 1973.  The investigators then pulled their medical records between 1994 and 2006 when they were between 73 and 87 years old and asked how many of them had dementia. The results may shock you.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The participants were divided into five groups based on their abdominal circumference. Those with the largest abdominal circumference were nearly 3 times more likely to have developed dementia than those with the smallest abdominal circumference. And that was after the data were adjusted for age, sex, race, education, diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, stroke and heart disease - all factors that are known to affect the risk of dementia.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Interestingly enough the abdominal circumference was a better predictor of dementia risk than was BMI, the most frequently used measure of obesity. Those subjects who had high abdominal obesity and normal BMI had a 2-fold increased risk of developing dementia, while those subjects who were obese but had normal abdominal circumference had only an 80%&lt;br /&gt;increased risk of developing dementia. Of course, those people who were both obese and had a large belly were the worst off - they had almost a 4-fold increased risk of developing dementia.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;What's the Worst that can Happen?&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You put on a few extra pounds - especially around the middle.  Your blood sugar goes up a bit. Is that a big deal? What's the worst that could happen?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Try Cancer for Starters!&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When your blood sugar levels go up, your body produces more insulin and a protein called insulin-like growth factor to try and keep your blood sugar levels under control.  Both of these hormones stimulate the growth of cancer cells.  This has been known for years, but scientists have argued as to whether this was a real concern or just of theoretical interest.  Two recent studies - one in Korea and one in Sweden - have shown that this is a very real concern.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Swedish study, published in the December 2009 issue of PLoS Medicine, followed 550,000 residents of Sweden, Norway and Austria for 10 years. It showed that high blood sugar levels increased the risk of cancer by 11% for women and 5% for men.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The cancers most affected by high blood sugar levels were cancers of the pancreas, gallbladder, liver and bladder - although the incidence of most other cancers was increased as well. Interestingly, prostate cancer - the most common form&lt;br /&gt;of cancer in men - was not affected by high blood sugar levels. That explains why the effect of high blood sugar on cancer incidence was lower in men than in women.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Are you doomed to develop dementia and cancer when you get older if you are carrying around extra belly fat?"&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;The answer is no.&lt;/b&gt; Most experts feel that the effects of abdominal obesity are reversible. But the time to act is now! He said that something isn't right, no one has this dramatic improvement in hearing and especially considering your age. Once again his cholesterol numbers have significantly dropped! At the time of his cardiac arrest 20 years ago, his cholesterol was over 400. For years the number gradually went down. Two years ago it was 179 and last year, after a year of being on Vivix, it was 138. That's when his statins were cut in half. Researchers writing in BioMed Central's open access journal Environmental Health asked more than 1500 women about their cleaning product usage and found that women who reported using more air fresheners and products for mold and mildew control had a higher incidence of breast cancer.  &lt;P&gt; Julia Brody, from the Silent Spring Institute, USA, worked with a team of researchers to carry out telephone interviews with 787 women diagnosed with breast cancer and 721 comparison women. She said, "Women who reported the highest combined cleaning product use had a doubled risk of breast cancer compared to those with the lowest reported use. Use of air fresheners and products for mold and mildew control were associated with increased risk. To our knowledge, this is the first published report on cleaning product use and risk of breast cancer."  &lt;P&gt;  The researchers questioned women on product use, beliefs about breast cancer causes, and established and suspected risk factors. They found that cleaning products, air fresheners, and insect repellents were associated with breast cancer, but little association was observed with overall pesticide use.  &lt;P&gt;  Women with breast cancer who believed that chemicals and pollutants contribute 'a lot' to the risk of developing the condition were more likely to report high product usage. Speaking about this potential bias to the study, Brody said, "When women are diagnosed with breast cancer, they often think about what happened in the past that might have contributed to the disease.   &lt;P&gt;  As a result, it may be women with breast cancer more accurately recall their past product use or even over-estimate it. Or, it could also be experience with breast cancerinfluences beliefs about its causes. High-protein diets may promote significantly more weight loss compared to lower protein diets because of protein's role in promoting&amp;nbsp;satiety In a fairly recent study published in the &lt;em&gt;American Journal of Clinical Nutrition&lt;/em&gt;, researchers studied the effects of increasing dietary protein while maintaining carbohydrate content on weight loss, appetite, calorie intake, and fat mass in a small group of study participants. Initially, participants were instructed to follow a weight-maintaining diet (50% carbohydrate, 15% protein, 35% fat) for two weeks. Then for the following two weeks, they were asked to follow a diet providing the same amount of calories but with 50% of calories coming from carbohydrate, 30% from protein, and 20% from fat. Two weeks later, they were given an &lt;em&gt;ad libitum&lt;/em&gt; diet of&amp;nbsp; 50% carbohydrate, 30% protein, and 20% fat to follow for an additional 12 weeks.&amp;nbsp;Even though subjects could eat as much food as they wanted in those 12 weeks, they actually reduced their calorie intake by an average of 441 calories per day. They also lost an average of 10.8 pounds in body weight and 8.2 pounds of body fat.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Age-Related Muscle Loss:&lt;/strong&gt; After about age 40, most adults will lose anywhere between 0.5% and 1% of their skeletal muscle mass each year. And in the early years, this gradual loss may go unnoticed because it might be masked by a concurrent increase in body fat. However, chronic muscle loss?or what is known as sarcopenia?is estimated to affect &amp;nbsp;about 30% of people over age 60 and may affect more than 50% of those over age 80. Insufficient protein intake in older adults can contribute to a loss of muscle, and although the optimal amount of protein to prevent or offset the progression of sarcopenia has yet to be established, research findings suggest that protein intakes modestly above the present recommended dietary allowance of 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight per day (i.e. 1 gram per kilogram of body weight per day or higher) enhance muscle mass in older adults who regularly perform resistance exercise. Protein intake in older adults also appears to have a more beneficial effect when consumed within an hour or so of resistance exercise. Emerging research also suggests that dairy protein, especially whey protein, may minimize sarcopenia because of its high concentration of leucine, an amino acid known to stimulate muscle protein synthesis. For example, findings in older adults suggest that increasing leucine intake may help restore the protein synthesis response to protein-containing meals, which has been shown to diminish with age.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Cardiovascular Disease:&lt;/strong&gt; One concern that has been raised about the trend in high-protein diets for weight loss has been that eating diets high in protein and fat, and low in carbohydrate, would harm the heart. However, recent research findings suggest that if done in a healthy way, eating a little more protein, especially vegetable protein, while cutting back on refined carbohydrates may actually benefit the heart. A 20-year prospective study of 82,802 women found that those who ate low-carbohydrate diets high in vegetable sources of fat or protein had a 30% lower risk of heart disease, compared to women who ate high-carbohydrate, low-fat diets. But women who ate low-carbohydrate diets that were high in animal fats or proteins did not have a reduced risk of heart disease.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Cancer:&lt;/strong&gt; There's no good evidence that eating a little protein or a lot of it significantly influences cancer risk. However, eating a lot of red meat (cured and processed meats, in particular) has been&amp;nbsp;linked to an increased risk of colon cancer. There also has been considerable investigation of the potential of soy-protein-containing foods to reduce the risk of cancer, especially breast cancer. In a fairly recent review of studies based on Asian populations, higher soy intake was associated with an overall 29% decreased risk of breast cancer. Despite these positive findings, the relationship between soy foods and breast cancer risk has been controversial because of data gathered from cell culture and animal studies that suggest isoflavones (the plant-estrogen-like compounds in soy foods) stimulate the growth of estrogen-sensitive breast cancer cells. This has led to questions about the safety of soy consumption in women with a history of breast cancer or women at high risk for the disease. Research continues in this area, but it?s important to point out that several lines of existing evidence suggest that women with breast cancer can safely consume soy. First, human studies have shown that isoflavones &lt;em&gt;do not&lt;/em&gt; stimulate breast cell proliferation or increase breast tissue density (two markers of increased cancer risk), and &lt;em&gt;a lack&lt;/em&gt; of harmful effects have been noted in several clinical studies examining the impact of soy food intake on the prognosis of breast cancer patients. In one study, neither&amp;nbsp;soy nor isoflavone intake was related to the disease-free survival rate of breast cancer patients over a five-year follow-up period, and in a second study, higher soy intake was associated with a more favorable outcome for both total mortality and disease-specific mortality or relapse during a follow up period of two years. And even better news is that the benefit of soy food intake on survival was more pronounced among women with estrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer. Although these studies are encouraging, breast cancer remains a very serious health condition. Women with a history of breast&amp;nbsp;cancer should seek the advice of their doctor concerning the consumption of soy foods as part of an overall healthful diet.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Osteoporosis:&lt;/strong&gt; Prevention of osteoporosis is a public health priority and among nutritional factors, most attention has focused on the beneficial role of calcium. However, in addition to calcium, many other nutrients are necessary for bone health, including protein. Findings from many, but not all, epidemiological studies point to a beneficial role for dietary protein in bone health. High-protein intakes have been associated with reduced bone loss, high bone-mineral density, and reduced fracture risk in older adults. In a recent trial, increasing protein intake, especially when accompanied by calcium and vitamin D, reduced bone loss, improved muscle strength, and shortened the hospital stay in older patients with hip fractures whose usual intake of dietary protein was low.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;On the other hand, some studies suggest that excessive dietary protein intake may have detrimental effects on bone because of its effect on urinary calcium excretion. This controversy may be explained by other nutrients in food or the source of dietary protein. For example, dietary protein has been shown to exert a positive effect on the skeleton of older adults when calcium intake is adequate, but not when calcium intake is low.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Because protein exists in close association with other nutrients in the diet, it is important to consider protein?s role in bone health in the context of foods or the overall dietary pattern. A number of studies have demonstrated that intake of milk and other dairy products benefits bone health. That is, some researchers now believe that low-grade inflammation is associated with everything from heart disease and diabetes to Alzheimer’s and arthritis, and may even be the cause of most chronic diseases. This is not an entirely new theory. Inflammation was implicated in cancer many years ago. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There is an easy way to test for inflammation, since it can prompt the liver to produce a protein in the blood known as &lt;B&gt;C-reactive protein (CRP)&lt;/B&gt;. Elevated levels of CRP often accompany or signal an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. This may help explain why many people who get heart attacks have normal blood cholesterol levels and no other identifiable risk factors. Scientists have been searching for the missing pieces of this puzzle, and inflammation might be one of them. Bleached flour. Ingredients that can't be pronounced. Even fresh fruit...freshly picked apples lose vitamins by the hour. By the time fresh fruit gets to the store, sits on a shelf, is purchased, sits in the refrigerator, is cooked, and finally eaten, only a very small fraction of the nutritional value is left to be absorbed. The vital vitamins and minerals in the food supply today have been extremely diminished. Many nutritional experts agree that even if one were to eat 100% raw and organic fruits and vegetables, picked and eaten same-day straight from farmland, decades of farming has left large amounts of contracted land depleted. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; &lt;strong&gt;You have to consume 8-12 times the amount of produce, in some cases, to absorb what much of the farmland contained decades ago.&lt;/strong&gt; While 1 out of every 10,000 or so people even pick their own food, the rest of world relies on several-days to several-weeks old, processed, canned, previously cooked, etc. food to remain healthy. But it doesn't stop there. If the body doesn't get the vitamins it needs (read on to see why 100% of the US RDA is just a fraction of what you need each day), there is much improvement needed for a healthy living! For starters, vitamins regulate reactions that occur in metabolism, unlike other dietary components known as macronutrients (fats, carbohydrates, proteins). &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One can consume all the right amounts of these fats, carbohydrates, and proteins, get all the exercise needed, but unless there also are very adequate amounts of vitamins in the body to regulate how these macronutrients are used, benefits achieved will be slim to none! To repeat, a very adequate amount of vitamins are needed to get the benefits of exercise and macronutrients. Absence of just a single vitamin blocks one or more specific metabolic reactions in a cell and eventually may disrupt the metabolic balance within a cell and in our entire body.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;With the exception of Vitamin C (ascorbic acid), all of the water-soluble vitamins (meaning vitamins that need to be replenished each and every day because they are flushed out) assist enzymes that function in energy transfer/metabolism of fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. In other words, it is extremely difficult for our bodies to break down these nutrients into energy we can use without vitamins. these vitamins are scarcely found in the foods of the typical diet. Supplemenatation is needed!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;B&gt;A good question you can generally ask yourself...&lt;/B&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"How many times have I gotten sick in the past five years? How long did my symptoms usually last? 3 days? 5 days? a week or more?" Chances are, many will answer:&lt;br /&gt;"a good number of times and at least 3-5 days or more" respectively.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Some of the fat-soluble vitamins (Vitamins A, D, E, K) help form skin and mucous membranes, which thus increases resistance to infections. Once fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K) are consumed, they are stored in the liver and fat tissues in the body until needed. Some are stored for a few days, some for up to six months. Not only do these fat-soluble vitamins help anti-infection defenses, they help keep night vision at its best. Individuals tending to go blind during the night may not be getting enough Vitamin A (retinol).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;On the other hand, water-soluble vitamins such as Vitamin C and the B group of vitamins, are different. They are not stored nearly as much in the body. Instead, they travel through the bloodstream. Whatever the body doesn't use is released through urination. These kinds of vitamins need to be replaced often for that very reason.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;A good multivitamin is the foundation of health and nutrition&lt;/strong&gt;.
